At River City Dance Academy, we are dedicated to enriching children’s lives through quality dance instruction in a nurturing and challenging environment.  Our classes balance traditional technical training with fostering each child’s natural love of movement.  Students in our program leave class with respect for themselves and the art form of dance.  We believe that every child is a dancer!

 
 

Why Dance?

Dance has countless benefits for students of all ages.

Physically, dance teaches students body awareness, control, coordination, poise and balance.  From 2 to 92, dancers build strength, stamina, flexibility and agility.  Dance is a fun way for anyone to exercise and increase his or her fitness level.

 

The benefits of dance training go deeper than just muscles and bones:

  • Dance helps build self-esteem and self-awareness.
  • Students express and define their feelings through different styles and qualities of movement.
  • Dance teaches children self-discipline as they challenge themselves to work independently in the classroom.
  • Dance also teaches cooperation among students as they learn skills and choreography together.
  • Numerous studies have shown that dance classes can help improve focus and learning skills across all areas of development and education.
  • Students are also introduced to and grow to appreciate different cultures.

Dance & Gymnastics: A Match Made in Heaven

Having Dance and Gymnastics classes in one convenient facility offers our students a unique experience: to combine and supplement their training in two different but very integrated forms of movement training.  For the gymnast, dance can improve alignment, flexibility, performance quality, grace, poise and flow.  For the dancer, gymnastics can improve upper body strength, flexibility, stamina and overall athleticism.  Combining training makes a well-rounded, more confident athlete and artist.  We encourage our students to perform to their highest level whether it is in the dance studio, the gym, or both!

Dance & Gymnastics Combination Classes
The best of both worlds!  Students explore basic ballet and creative movement concepts in the dance studio, then move into the gym for obstacle courses and tumbling.
Dance & Gym Otter Pup I (ages 3-4) 45 min
Dance & Gym Otter Pup II (ages 4-5) 1 hour
 
Preschool Dance Classes
D1 Creative Movement/Ballet (ages 3-4):  This class is created for the young dancer who has a natural love of music and movement.  They will learn the basics of ballet while exploring their imagination using creative song and dance.  45 minutes.

D2 Ballet/Tap (ages 4.5-6): Grace and strength are taught during ballet time as coordination continues to develop. Rhythm and creative expression are the focus of tap time as we are introduced to "making music with our feet." 1 hour
 
 
 
 
Ballet Classes
Ballet is the foundation for almost every Western style of dance.  Each class begins at the Ballet barre with exercises to strengthen our feet, ankles, legs and balance as well as focus on alignment and posture.  Center practice builds coordination of the arms, legs and head as we learn more advanced skills in jumps and turns.  Students get the opportunity to move across the floor with traveling steps to teach fluidity and gain confidence in moving through space.
Ballet 1  (ages 6-8) 1 hour
Ballet 2 (ages 8-10) 1 hour
Ballet 3 (ages 11+) 1 hour
 
Hip Hop Dance Classes
Girls and guys dance to the hottest new hip hop tunes with the best of street dance.  We progress from basic warm-ups, pop/lock moves, floor work and learning choreography each class.  Full of energy, this class is a great cardio and strengthening workout to get ready for advanced floor work and freezes.  Movement and music are always age-appropriate.
Hip Hop 1  (ages 6-10) 1 hour
Hip Hop 2 (ages 11+) 1 hour
 
Combination Classes (Ballet/Tap/Jazz)
These classes serve as an introduction to three classic styles of dance.  Students become familiar with basic vocabulary and steps in Ballet, Tap and Jazz.  Technique and alignment are emphasized in Ballet as we continue building the basis for our dance education.  Advanced rhythm tap skills are taught as children progress and the study of free form jazz movement begins along with properly learning various turns and leaps.

Level D4 (ages 8-9.5) 1 hour 15 min
Level D5 (ages 9.5-11) 1 hour 30 min
